Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to help those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. It is a powerful, nonthreatening medium that enables unique outcomes for those in treatment. Programs can be designed to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, enhance memory, improve communication, and provide unique opportunities for interaction.
Music is a form of sensory stimulation, which provokes responses due to the familiarity, predictability, and feelings of security associated with it. Research in music therapy has shown to increase motivation to engage in treatment, provide emotional support for clients and their families, and create an outlet for expression of feelings.
For participants, music therapy provides wonderful therapeutic benefits. For families, it provides a forum to share common experiences, spend meaningful time with your loved ones and promote unity, intimacy and reminiscence of the family bonds.
