Wingate Residences at Brewster Place encourages a social lifestyle so residents remain active, engaged, and connected. We strive to instill a sense of belonging and connection to others within our residences and also with the local community beyond our walls. Brewster Place has a long history of offering engaging social programming to residents, their family members, and our friends throughout the Cape. These programs tap into our residents’ passions, promoting a sense of purpose and interaction with the world around them. Below are descriptions of a few of our outstanding programs.
Promoting the Arts: Summer and Winter Concert Series
Since 1997, Brewster Place has invited the public to enjoy free, professional performances during our Summer and Winter Concert Series. Over the past twenty years, these concerts have become a beloved, seasonal staple on the Cape, drawing people from far and wide. During the summer series, guests set up lawn chairs to enjoy the open-air concerts on our beautiful grounds. In the winter, our living room transforms into a ballroom, with residents and their loved ones foxtrotting and waltzing to the tunes of our popular performers.
Giving Back: A Baby Center
In 2000, Brewster Place’s executive director was approached by 90-year-old resident Fred Zacheus. Fred wanted to adopt A Baby Center, a mission of the Cape Cod Council of Churches that supports low-income families by providing basic necessities for babies. Fred thought Brewster Place could become a valuable resource to the Cape community and that many of our residents would enjoy volunteering their time in support of a meaningful cause. Fred’s mission has since developed into our community’s longest-standing community service project. A donation playpen is a permanent fixture in our community’s foyer and is regularly filled with baby supplies by residents and visitors. While all events hosted at our community are free to the public, we do encourage guests to contribute donations for A Baby Center.
Lifelong Learning and Self-Expression: Memoir Writing Class
To help residents quickly feel at home and connected to their new neighbors, we offer regularly scheduled activities and classes that encourage participants to share their interests, passions, and memories. One of our most popular programs is the Memoir Writing Class taught by Carol Vogler Bright, a former newspaper reporter and author. Carol offers weekly writing classes to residents and staff, inspiring them to share their stories and even pursue publication. Patricia Dyke, a Brewster Place resident and member of Carol’s writing group, was inspired to cross genres and write a poem about the welcoming, caring environment of our community. Take a listen!
