Person-Centric, Dynamic Care

Wingate Healthcare has been providing care for individuals with memory-related illnesses for over 25 years. This experience, coupled with long-standing partnerships with Boston’s elite network of researchers, clinicians and advocacy groups, has enabled us to develop and continually refine our Memory Care at Wingate philosophy. Every person in our care possesses unique capabilities and, as a result, a distinct set of needs. So we provide for each person individually and uniquely with a plan to improve their quality of life (as well as their family’s), wherever they may be in the arc of their cognitive impairment. Memory Care at Wingate is “person-centric.” We celebrate each resident’s individuality, understand their history, and explore their passions for learning, for the outdoors or for family and friends. Our supportive caregivers integrate that knowledge into a tailored plan featuring daily mental and physical enrichment activities experienced through laughter and love. The Memory Care environment is expansive both indoors and out, allowing residents the freedom to move about and enjoy elements of independence. Memory Care at Wingate is dynamic. Our care unites body, mind, spirit and emotions to reach each resident where they are in their personal journey, and evolve with them as their needs change. Partnerships between local researchers and clinicians and our staff supports continued evaluation of resident progress and furthers our understanding of each person’s needs and how best to care for them. We embrace family members as well, providing resources for education and coping, as well as limitless access to our expertly trained caregivers. Memory Care at Wingate is purposefully designed. Memory Care at Wingate reflects our best practices in the design of communities for those with cognitive loss. Specialized lighting, tactile art, paint schemes, furnishings, flooring and interior layouts are all thoughtfully designed to create familiar soothing spaces that enhance our residents’ daily experience. Each detail is thoughtfully considered to create a nurturing environment that fosters success, promotes familiarity and encourages interaction. Memory Care at Wingate is luxurious. The environment our residents live in is instrumental to fostering a high quality of life. From our elegant dining room to our plush gardens and patios, we pay attention to every detail to create living spaces that are as sophisticated and well-appointed as they are functional. In the spirit of inclusion, memory care residents enjoy all the community’s luxuries, no matter their level of care.

The HOPE Study

The Wingate Residences is a proud partner of Boston University School of Medicine’s Health Outreach Program for the Elderly (HOPE) study. Beginning in November 2015, the Wingate Residences became the primary HOPE study research site outside of the BU medical campus. Working with the HOPE study team, we created a dedicated space within our Memory Care neighborhood that is safe and secure for participants who visit our community each week. As a care provider for residents living with memory-related illnesses including Alzheimer’s, our hope is that access to more resources will benefit the HOPE Study and enable the medical community to better understand and more quickly find new treatments for this terrible disease.

About the HOPE Study

The Health Outreach Program for the Elderly (HOPE) study is the flagship research project of the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease and CTE Center (BU ADC). The BU ADC is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is one of only 27 similar centers across the country, all working together to improve our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) so that one day we will live in a world without this devastating disease. The HOPE Study is the flagship research study conducted by the BU ADC. Led by Dr. Robert Stern, the study is a longitudinal research investigation of several hundred participants from all around Greater Boston and New England. HOPE participants are evaluated annually for a half-day examination consisting of physical and neurological examinations, formal tests of memory and other cognitive skills, and a blood draw for genetic and other measurements. Some participants have been involved in the HOPE study for almost 20 years. However, new participants are enrolled on an ongoing basis. In addition to providing the researchers with valuable information to answer important scientific questions, HOPE participants are also routinely asked if they would like to volunteer for other research studies, including: state-of-the-art investigations of new methods to diagnose AD accurately and early (even before symptoms begin), clinical trials of new medications to treat and prevent AD symptoms; studies of genetic and other risk factors; projects to examine the effect of exercise on memory; projects aimed at understanding the impact of dementia on family and other caregivers; and several studies on the long-term consequences of repetitive head impacts, such as those experienced by football players and other athletes. If you’re interested in learning more about the HOPE Study, please contact a member of the Wingate staff or Diane Maritza Essis at dessis@bu.edu, or visit www.bu.edu/alzresearch.
