Technology is not just for millennials. In fact, we believe that technological innovation can play an important role in improving the experiences of residents and staff at our communities. In 2013 we introduced custom-made, digital signage at the Wingate Residences at Needham to allow residents and staff to access information in a more engaging, interactive way. Using touch-screen technology, residents could access dining menus, activity calendars and register for salon and spa amenities. Beyond incorporating technology for functionality, we also introduced digital art to enhance the aesthetics of our community. Our efforts to create a modern, interactive experience for residents and staff at our Needham community were recognized in 2014 by McKnight’s, the pre-eminent magazine for long-term care, with an award for the integration of technology
While we were honored by the accolade, our aim in updating our communities with technology was to benefit our residents and team. After careful review and analysis of our custom touchscreen technology, we concluded that there was room for improvement. Feedback from residents and staff led us to adopt Touchtown digital signage, a plug-and-play software that is more user-friendly. We also upgraded the digital art in our lobby to Moving Murals, displaying ‘live art’ in a variety of scenes; these beautiful displays will also be featured in the common areas of One Wingate Way, our luxury independent living community.
When McKnight’s followed up with us to review the status and success of our custom digital signage, we owned the shortcomings of our original technology and confirmed that we found a marketplace product that did it one better. The bottom line: everything we do, we do to improve the experience for our residents and staff. Our goal of incorporating new technology in our communities is not just a show of modernization, but a genuine effort to improve the Wingate experience—if this goal isn’t achieved, we head back to the drawing board to find the best products and services we can.
