Wingate at Hampden awarded Five-Star Overall Quality Rating by CMS

Hampden, Mass. — Wingate at Hampden, a skilled nursing community with a specialized memory care program, was recently awarded a Five-Star Overall Quality Rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. CMS uses a Five-Star Quality Rating System to compile and publish ratings of nursing homes on Nursing Home Compare, an online database that helps consumers evaluate more than 15,000 Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing homes across the country.

“I would like to thank the staff members who’ve been with us for so long — many of them as long as 10 years to 40 plus years — for helping us achieve this milestone,” said Administrator Kevin LeClaire. “They truly do care about our special population of memory care residents and strive to provide quality care.”

CMS awards nursing homes between one and five stars for three separate categories in its quality rating system: health inspections, quality measures and staffing. It then awards an overall quality rating based on the scores nursing homes received in the individual categories. Nursing homes that receive five stars are considered to provide quality high above average, and facilities with one star are considered to deliver quality far below average.

In addition to its Five-Star Overall Quality Rating, Wingate at Hampden received a five-star rating in the quality measures category for continually meeting residents’ physical and clinical needs. Wingate at Hampden also received a four-star rating in the health inspections category based on results from its on-site inspections for the past three years, including standard surveys and any complaint surveys.

Wingate at Hampden’s exceptional quality care is demonstrated by its specialized memory care program, The Neighborhood, which features a unique music therapy group. This interactive group encourages memory care patients to write their own music, allowing residents to reconnect with their identities and share memories and life stories with one another. With the help of certified music therapist Renee Coro-Wilson, this group of Wingate at Hampden memory care residents created and produced their own CD entitled Songs from the Heart.

In 2016, Wingate at Hampden received a National Quality Bronze Award from the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living in acknowledgement of the community’s commitment to quality.
